Vantage Point at Alowyn Gardens

Hi all,

I recently decided to participate in a Pinterest project called #VantagePoint put together by Light, a compact camera maker. I have chosen to write about my favorite photography location, and how my equipment plays a part in how I photograph. Well it was easy for me to choose Alowyn Gardens as my favorite photography location. I am a regular visitor there for multiple reasons. Firstly it is such a peaceful place, with beautiful gardens. Very relaxing. Secondly, there is always something new to photograph. No matter how many times I go, I always find something inspirational.

The camera I use is a Sony RX100. This is a fixed lens compact camera, with full manual functionality. I chose this camera because it allowed me full control of my settings, has an excellent aperture available of 1.8, and is compact. I can easily take it with me.

Full control of the settings in my camera is important to me, as I like to take close up macro shots of flowers and insects, so shutter speed and aperture is very important to get the shot just right.

Here are some of the photos from my recent visit to Alowyn Gardens, as you can see I was excited the insects were out!

It was a lot of fun writing this #VantagePoint post, and I must say I am interested in their cameras given they too are compact! I look forward to finding out more about them soon.

Insects in spring

Spring has sprung in Melbourne!

Hi all,

Well Spring has Sprung in Melbourne and the insects and flowers are out in force – so I joined them with my camera!!

Earlier this year we planted a lot of flowering plants in our garden to attract the insects, yes I had an ulterior photography motive! Yesterday morning the sun was shining, the flowers were out and the bees were pollinating! So I took the opportunity to get some photos.

Gardens at Lambley Nursery

Hi all,

Recently I visited Lambley Nursery in Ascot, just past Ballarat in Victoria. It takes approximately 2 hours from Melbourne by car. This is a gorgeous nursery specialising in drought tolerant plants. I must say, many of the plants are stunning! Even in Autumn, flowers everywhere! My favourite by far was the Salvia. We purchased quite a few plants too, mostly Salvia’s, so hopefully my garden will look this good sometime!

Definitely worth a visit if you are interested in some lovely gardens!

Insects at Como Gardens

Hi all,

Firstly, Happy Easter! I hope you and your family are having a lovely easter.

Last weekend I visited Como Gardens in the Dandenongs. This is a lovely property that is opened to the public two weekends a year in Autumn and Spring. They are gorgeous gardens with a rainforest walk, formal flower garden, lake and a miniature railway!

As you may expect if you have been following my blog, I was on the lookout for flowers and insects. I was not disappointed!

Praying Mantis and Caterpillar

Rippon Lea House & Garden

Hi all,

I visited Rippon Lea House & Garden a few weeks ago. It is a beautiful old Mansion and gardens. I would describe it as a peaceful oasis within busy suburbia. Within its fenced surrounds, you forget you are within a city!

Paradise! Love to take a dip?

It is definitely worth a visit! I’ll be back.

Insects Macro

Hi all,

As it is Spring in Melbourne Australia, I have been finding many insects out within the flowers. This has certainly sparked my interest in Macro photography.

This bee was very actively seeking pollen!

I was photographing this flower when I spotted the camouflaged insect within!

I like the contrast between the dark fly and the yellow flower.

The big eyes on this little spider intrigued me, I’m not normally a spider fan!

I have a feeling there will be more macro insect photos appearing in the future, quite a lot of fun!
